A quick shot in our Scranton Newborn Photographer studio today of my son Indiana. I really couldn’t resist the “adorableness” of this image. One of the great things about being a newborn photographer in Scranton is the absolute joy people are to be around who are first time parents. It reminds me of how I felt when this kid was born. As many of you know who follow our personal blog we became first time parents about two years ago. I really was nervous about becoming a father. I don’t know why as I was raised in a big family. My parents had six kids and 47 foster children. No really, they had 47 foster children. It was like the united nations in my hone growing up. My mother had a newborn in her home for 27 straight years. My brother an I Charles were the last two foster kids my parents had before my father finally said no to the adoption agency. Being the last two foster kids in my mothers arms was fortunate for us. They decided that they would keep us and they are the only family I have ever known. I don’t know why I am telling this story today, but before I start babbling let me just say I had nothing to worry about when I found out we were going to be having our first child. Parenting is pretty awesome and I had good role models.

The Gillian family came to our Scranton Newborn Portrait Studio last week for some newborn photography and thought I would give a little preview of their session on the blog today. I worked with them both for their maternity session and we had a fun day working together so when they came into the studio with this little one it felt like there was a new member of the family coming for a visit.

I love working with young families who are having their first child. I remember a few years ago when my wife and I had our first child and I can honestly say their is nothing like seeing new first time parents and the joy they have about the new little person they have welcomed into their family.

Lavelle Family

The Lavelle family invited me to their home in Clarks Summit for their newborn family pictures this week and gave me their whole home to work with for their pictures. I was not able to photograph their wedding a few years ago so when they had their first child they asked me to photograph him when they brought him home from the hospital. It was really strange meeting them because I did not recognize them and then they started to tell me the story of how they met with me to photograph their wedding. Unfortunately, due to a scheduling change at the last minute I was not available on their wedding day. After they saw these pictures they asked me if I would be willing to photograph child’s baptism so a few weeks later I met up with them again for a few hours to document that special time in their lives. As a photographer you really are invited into peoples lives in a way that is hard to explain. There is so much joy that I get out of what I do and I feel really blessed about what I do for a living.

Clara came into our NEPA Newborn studio today at for her newborn session and spent some time sleeping. When I say sleeping I mean she slept for two hours straight so it made it really easy to work with her. Her parents were past wedding clients of mine a few years ago so it was a pleasure seeing them again and also catching up with life over the last couple of years. I love that many of my brides come to me for their maternity and newborn pictures. It’s great to see couples who I worked with for their wedding come back when they have their first child.

For these next few shot I went over the Michael’s in Dickson City and bought a few packages of yarn and some styrofoam circles to make a nice comfortable little pocket for clara to be placed in. I don’t know what made me think about making something like this, but I love how these pictures turned out. All it took me was about ten dollars and a half an hour to put them together.

Baby Evie

Evie came to visit us in the studio today in Scranton and just had to share a few frames from her session. Last week I headed over to Jo-Ann’s fabrics in Dickson city on a search for old vintage patterns to use in the studio as backdrops for newborn sessions. I thought this would be a simple half hour shopping trip. It turned into about three hours of looking for the perfect patterns that I wanted to use. I haven’t been in that store for a few years so when I walked in I was overwhelmed with all my choices. I feel bad for the lady who searched and searched with me for the perfect patterns that I was looking for.

Typically, I like to do lifestyle session oriented photography with newborns. I love it when people invite me to their home for their pictures, but every now and then people come to our studio in Scranton for their time with us. These pictures are some of my favorites from my time wi baby Evie and I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed taking them.

If you are expecting a new addition to your family be sure to get in our schedule as soon as possible and be sure to check in on our blog from time to time as we sometimes offer specials for people who book both their maternity and newborn sessions with us at the same time.

Today in the Studio the Smith family came in from Binghamton NY for their Newborn Session. When Ryan’s parents started looking for a newborn photographer in Binghamton they just couldn’t find what they were looking for out of the photographers in their area. Looking for Scranton newborn photographers was not even something that came to mind as we are over an hour away from them. A friend of theirs recommended us to them and a few months later we headed to Binghamton for their family session.  Ryan is a sleepy little guy so this session went so smoothly it literally took about 45 minutes from start to finish. Typically, we book our newborn sessions about 3 months in advance of the time they are expected to arrive and we only schedule these sessions on the weekend so if you are expecting a new addition to the family be sure to get in our schedule early.

Another option we offer expecting families is a maternity and newborn session all in one package. Feel free to ask us about the discount we give for booking both your sessions with us all at once. We would be happy to share with you what we are doing to capture your whole pregnancy from before and after the little one arrives.

Preparing For Your Session:

Scranton Portrait Studio Newborn Preparation

Once you decide to schedule a newborn session after your maternity session In Scranton PA with Darkershadesofbrown Photography , we will set a tentative date based on your due date.  I understand that babies rarely come when predicted and I will accommodate their personal plans for arrival, but a due date will give us a base line.  Once your infant is born, please get in touch with me and we will firm up our date and time.  Babies are best photographed in the first 10 days of their new little lives.  They sleep better, don’t have colic yet, and usually haven’t started developing baby acne or cradle cap.  If you are a c-section Mom, we can work out something around your recovery.

When we schedule your session, we will have a conversation about what you are looking for.  Do you want only pictures of the baby?  Are you more interested in your infant being photographed with family than in some of my props?

Please do not feed your infant before coming to see me.  I will give you space and time to feed the baby and sooth him to sleep once you arrive.  The reason this works best is that if you feed your baby before you come he will start his sleep cycle while in his car seat.  No good.  We want him to do that at the studio.

It is always nice to have a pacifier.  This will help me to sooth your baby in between poses.  If you have chosen not to use a pacifier, please be prepared to help me by having your finger ready for your baby to suck on.

I photograph babies in their birthday suits.  I have yet to photograph a newborn in clothes and hope that I am never asked to do so.  Newborn babies just don’t fill out clothes properly.  They are so much sweeter without all that bulky fabric.  I would be happy to schedule another session down the road to photograph your baby in any special outfits, especially christening / blessing outfits.

What should you wear?  Wear something comfortable.  Keep in mind that I rarely if ever show anything below the waist in a portrait.  So you can wear shorts, jeans, or whatever else you choose.  As far as tops are concerned I LOVE black tank tops for Moms.  Black shirts and blouses are best.  Bring something to change into after I am done photographing you with baby that is nice and cool.  I keep my studio very warm at around 80 degrees.  It is all about the baby.  So think about keeping cool when you are choosing clothing.

I strongly encourage you to bring any special hats, hair-bands, bracelets etc….  You may not like what I have and I may fall in love with what you bring.  So not only will your additions give us more to choose from they are also extra special since they belong to your little one.

Lastly, if you should think of anything before you come please feel free to contact me.  I live and breathe by checking my email!  I will respond in a very timely manner.

During Your Session:

Once you arrive I will give you some time in my studio to feed and sooth your baby.  Once she is happy and sleepy please let me know so I can join you.

I start my sessions by taking some portraits of your baby on a beanbag.  I am looking for some great body shots and capturing some of baby’s bits and pieces like her hands and feet.

Once we have these  more important poses under our belt,  I will move on to photographing your newborn in the props that you have chosen.
